Flow Measurement Project for Strongly Corrosive Liquid in a Chemical Plant

This project addresses the measurement of strongly corrosive liquid containing fluoride ions in a chemical plant. 15 sets of SIENCUN LDE-PFA PFA-lined electromagnetic flowmeters were adopted. The PFA lining offers excellent corrosion resistance against high-concentration fluoride ions, paired with PTFE electrodes for long-term stability. After implementation, the flowmeters operate reliably with accuracy better than 0.5%, maintenance interval extended to over 12 months, solving the frequent replacement issue and ensuring production continuity.

Project Background

A large chemical enterprise involves flow measurement of strongly corrosive liquids containing high concentrations of fluoride ions (e.g., hydrofluoric acid, fluoride salt solutions). Previous flowmeters suffered from lining and electrode corrosion, leading to leakage or failure every 3-6 months, severely impacting production safety and efficiency. The customer urgently needed a corrosion-resistant, long-life flow measurement solution.

Customer Challenges

1. Medium contains fluoride ions at 10%-30%, highly corrosive to conventional linings (e.g., neoprene, polyurethane) and electrodes (e.g., 316L, Hastelloy);
2. Some pipelines have high temperature (60-80°C) and pressure fluctuations (0.3-0.6MPa), demanding high temperature and pressure resistance;
3. Limited on-site space requires compact structure and easy installation/maintenance;
4. Explosion-proof requirement (ExdⅡBT4).

Solution

SIENCUN provided LDE-PFA electromagnetic flowmeters with key features:
- Lining: PFA (perfluoroalkoxy), resistant to fluoride corrosion, temperature up to 180°C, meeting working conditions;
- Electrode: Tantalum or platinum-iridium alloy, anti-corrosion against fluoride;
- Converter with intelligent signal processing, adaptable to low conductivity media (≥5μS/cm);
- Compact design, IP67 protection, ExdⅡBT4 certification;
- 15 sets in DN25-DN80 sizes to suit various pipe diameters.

Implementation Process

1. Site survey to confirm pipeline parameters, medium temperature/pressure, installation environment;
2. Customized PFA lining and electrode materials, factory calibration;
3. Batch installation aligned with pipeline maintenance windows, about 2 hours per unit;
4. Grounding, wiring, parameter setting (range, damping, excitation frequency, etc.);
5. In-situ flow calibration against reference meter, error within ±0.5%.

Implementation Results

1. Flowmeters operate stably with no leakage or corrosion, accuracy maintained at 0.5%;
2. Maintenance interval extended from 3 months to over 12 months, annual maintenance cost reduced by about 60%;
3. Production continuity significantly improved, downtime due to instrument failure reduced by 90%;
4. Customer highly satisfied with corrosion resistance, planning to expand application to other corrosive media lines.
